DEEP IN THE WOODS

TREES & MORE TREES

I get an early start: the sun is shining! My first decision is whether to take the route on the north side of the river or the south side. The south side is looking more interesting with more trees so I take that one. I notice a fence covered with flowers. It reminds me of my former farm and the 52 varieties of edible flowers we grew. I pause and snack on some Nasturtiums.

At one place, apple trees are lining the road. Apples have fallen onto the lush grass and roll onto the road and I am happy to pick a few up and tuck them into my bike basket pantry. Farther on, I see a young boy carrying his heavy school backpack. He is happy to have an apple too.

As the morning rolls along my… the route goes through a pine tree lined path and then through a section with lots of uphill climbs.

A part of the road is under construction and there is no detour so I just head down to where the construction men are working and ask them how I can get past the obstruction. One of the men says “No problem”, picks up my heavy bike like it is a feather and carries it over the barrier!

Charming Pension in Domitz, Germany.

CHARMING PENSION

After 52 kilometers and a cake break, I decide to take the ferry over to the north side for another 21 kilometers to the town of Domitz. The north side has a straight paved path. I feel like I’m flying. It detours through some small towns and woods and still remains flat.

In Domitz I see a very inviting and charming bicyclist’s pension and decide to stop for the night. The woman in charge mentions Miami and discovers I lived there: we have a delightful chat. She rents me a private room with internet for the low rate of 35 euro.

Traveling by bike makes me thankful daily for the chance to be outside, to be constantly amazed by the scenery and to be so in the present moment.

Planning is unnecessary…
