WILDLIFE & CAMPLIFE
There is constant discussion about the presence of grizzly bears…..
There talk is so pervasive that it feels like a grizzly bear will jump out at any moment, especially during my early morning solo rides! Even though we carry bear spray on our bikes, the best defense against bears is the human voice. I hate breaking the silence of the morning with the sound of my voice.
There is only one encounter with a grizzly bear and it was next to a busy road. On a huge road side sign on a steep climb leaving the Tetons, it says “Stay in car. Bears on road”. Yup! Staying on my bike. Ahead there are lots of cars and campers haphazardly pulled off the road. A mother grizzly and her cub are feeding way down below us - oblivious to attentive photo taking audience above - see tiny dots in bottom of 1st pic!
WILDLIFE
Gizzly bears are just one of many animals I see on this journey. I also see:
deer and coyote in Montana
hawks especially before Lima, Montana
pronghorn and wild mustang in the Great Basin, Wyoming
a black bear and sandhill cranes in Colorado
hares, salamander and tarantulas in New Mexico
marmuts and chipmunks everywhere!
