WANTING MORE

The slice of Tanzania I experienced exposed me to people who are industrious, constantly on the move, and quick to smile. I noticed how so much of life in this country happens along the road side: vendors selling their wares, produce for sale, people walking, children playing, herders guiding their animals and life moving along as it has for centuries - now a little faster with motorcycles and buses.

The landscape that acts as a backdrop to all the activity on the roads varies from dry savanna to humid mountains. Thankfully, there is a network of 21 national parks that are preserving an ecosystem covering over 99,000 square kilometers of this most amazing land.

SPECIAL PEOPLE

This memorable trip happened thanks to a group of special people. My deep appreciation to:

  • Cleopa, owner-operator of GFP Organics (on the left in the first photo below) who made my visit possible.

  • Neema, with IESC (the host organization), who expertly handled all the ground logistics.

  • GFP Team:

    • Margaret, the general manager who facilitated everything.

    • Eric, the Quality Control Manager who I worked most closely with, is super knowledgeable and a real pleasure to work with daily.

    • Ramadhan, the intern, who did a spectacular job with the test plot map and laying out the random treatments on the plants.

  • Joerg, from Austria, who is at GFP for 6 months formalizing communication and transparency procedures for Sonnentor. He contributed invaluable information to our project.

  • Godfrey, my driver for the trip to Tanga and GFP every day who shared a lot of information about Tanzania.

  • The very committed and fantastic Organic Farmers!

  • Stephan, my driver for the ride to Mikumi, who was especially nice to share life stories with.

  • My hiking guides, Gerald and Isreal who gave me a much deeper appreciation of their country.

  • Saitoti, a Maasai, who I had fun doing a photo-op with at the Tan-Swiss Lodge in Mikumi.

THANK YOU ALL!

While I’m from a different side of the planet and from a different culture, we had a lot in common in our care for the earth and shared humanity…

I hope to be invited back!
