ON THE ROAD TO XILITLA
Continuing on Route 120, we descend from the mountain tops passing through more Magical Towns. A distinctive feature of each magical town is having huge letters of the town name in the central plaza decorated with images special to them. We pass through: Jalpan de Serra with its church; De Matamoros with the intriguing murals and Ahuacatlan with retail shops advertising bread and showing clothes.
THE JAMES EDWARDS GARDEN
Xilitla is a town perched on the side of the mountain. Just beyond it is the famous Edward James surrealist garden, with sculptural influences from around the world, that incorporates principles of sacred geometry! The only way to see it is with a reservation and a guide. I feel lucky to have Charlie as a guide. He is so knowledgeable and enthusiastic and has worked here many years.
I learned that Edward James, having inherited wealth, became a patron of the arts and is best known as a passionate supporter of Surrealism. He was a poet and sculptor. He fell in love with an area known as Las Posas (The Pools) and spent over 20 years developing his fantasy garden among the streams and ponds.
It’s an experience - eyes wide open, full of wonder - 80 acres of lush tropical jungle with mind bending sculpture throughout!
Towns and gardens… each with their unique presentations.
